“It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action and discipline that enabled us to follow through.”

– Zig Ziglar: American author, salesperson, and motivational speaker

This is a good thing to think about this time of year.

But it’s an even better thing to put into action.

The three keys to success are simple: Character, Commitment, and Discipline.

Of course Zig isn’t the first to put these attributes together. The core values of the Marine Corps (you KNEW this was coming) are Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

All of these things are similar in nature.
But they’re just words.
Just words.

Honor, Courage, Commitment …

Character, Discipline, Loyalty …

Heroism, Valor, Determination.

Those words were painted on the walls, the stanchions, and the common areas of the barracks I was assigned to as a Marine recruit. I had hardly even known such words before that. They became the catechism of my conversion.
They’re words.
Just words.

The point at which you put words into action is the point at which your life changes. It’s the point where you take control of your life. It’s the point where you take your life to a new dimension, paint with a new palette, journey in a new direction. Make changes that set the tone for the rest of the year, maybe even the rest of your life.

2012 can be a year of greatness and accomplishment. Greatness and accomplishment defined by you. Your definition of what it means to be successful. Your definition of what it means to be you. Success on your terms. You on your terms.

Have you written — or are you writing — goals and resolutions for this new year? Have you at least thought about it?

Include the key areas of life in your goals and resolutions: health, fitness, career, family, finances, service.
1. Put it in writing.
2. Make it specific and measurable.
3. Give yourself deadlines.
4. Set intermediary goals.
5. Make it realistic.

You can use the acronym SMART to help you formulate your goals:
Specific.
Measurable.
Attainable.
Realistic.
Time Defined.

Some of you may prefer to have a “bucket list” approach to setting you plans for the new year. That’s a good approach too. My son, Matthew, recently asked me what my fitness plans were for the next year, that is besides the more than 630 workouts I lead every year, and besides the two half marathon training groups I lead every year, and besides the 3 to 5 triathlons I do a year.

I am determined not to settle in the major areas of my life. Ever. I’m always willing to be agreeable and compromise. Compromise in which everyone wins is a good thing. Compromise in which I lose isn’t. And settling is something all together different. All together bad different.

If settling has a sound (my apologies to Death Cab for Cutie *) it’s the sound of a resigned sigh. The sigh of resignation. It’s the sound of missed opportunities. It’s the sound of absent courage. It’s the sound of mediocrity. It’s the sound of a lifeless rut, a loveless relationship, a lonesome heart. One of the things my 81 year old mother told me recently was, “Life is both too short and too long to settle.”

Don’t settle.

Don’t sell your soul for comfort and ease. The road less traveled isn’t a well worn trail. Passion will have a different feel and a different path.

I hope you’ll take off the bridle and the bit and let 2012 run free!

Be brave!

WHY ARE OUTDOOR WORKOUTS GOOD FOR YOU IN THE WINTER?

A: Here are five benefits of cold weather workouts!
1. Strengthens the immune system!
2. Naturally increases the body’s production of saratonin, a natural calming chemical in your body.
3. Increased calorie burn!
4. Runny noses keep the cooties from taking up residence inside your schnozz and making you sick.
5. Bragging rights! You get to tell your sissy “indoor” friends how tough you are!

What should you wear? Layers. Layer your clothes so that you can adjust your body temperature as you get warmed up.
One more thing to remember about our outdoor winter workouts: hydrate! Because we’re not hot and sweaty, like in the summer, we often don’t drink enough water in the winter time. So hydrate y’all!

——————————————————-

SPRING HALF MARATHON!

Did you miss out on the St. Jude Half? Did it sell out too quickly for you? Were you envious of those who got to run it?

There are at least five half marathons in April! There is one in Nashville, Louisville, St. Louis, Oklahoma City, and a new one here in Memphis – Dash for Dads Half Marathon! (The Germantown Half Marathon is in March.)

This will be my 17th half marathon training session! I’ve trained hundreds to run their first and their 10th half marathon, newbies and veterans alike! I can train you too!

Thinking about it?

The prerequisites are simple: if you can cover 3 miles in 36 minutes or less by Jan. 28th, you’re good to go! The cost is cheap and the rewards are HUGE!

Training begins on January 28 for the spring half marathon season! More details to follow!

WIND CHILL AND INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Anytime the wind-chill drops below 30 – in the 38117 zip code! — we’ll go inside. Get the Weather.com app for your phone and check to see what the temperature “feels like.” That’s the number we’ll use. What it FEELS LIKE!

The 0645 class is inside from now until March.

Check with weather.com or The Weather Channel. I’ll post it on my Facebook page and the Boot Camp website Blog page (http://usmcfitnessbootcamp.com/blog/) if there’s a question. And if you’re not sure, you can text me at 901-644-0145.

What about inclement weather days?

We’ll follow the Memphis City Schools decision. If they close, we’ll stand-down. If they close in the morning but the streets are clear and good to go by the afternoon, the evening class will meet. I’ll post that status on Facebook and the Boot Camp Blog page.

HELP WANTED
Do you know of someone who could be another Sergeant Tony?
I’m looking to expand the empire BEYOND Memphis.
I’d especially like to move into north Mississippi or northern Shelby County. Like Hernando or Millington! But someone in another major city would be great too.
Here’s a little of what I’m looking for in a prospective “Sergeant Tony.”
* Former military, preferably a Marine.
* College degree, or working toward it.
* Exercise certification, military or civilian, or working toward it.
* Personally interested and involved in a lifestyle of fitness and athletics.
* Good communication skills, written and oral. (I answer about 40 emails a day, write a newsletter, and answer more than a half dozen or so daily Boot Camp related phone calls)
* Outgoing personality with a GREAT sense of humor!
* Genuinely likes people, hiding behind a sadistic facade.
* Humble, modest, caring, and sensitive (ok, ok, whatever) You get the idea.
If you know of someone who would be a good fit, please forward this on to them and direct them to the website:
