COMING BACK TO LIFE! — Sgt. Tony Ludlow’s Newsletter for 8/31/2011

Aug. 31st 2011

“Tony, you know how it feels when you’ve had the flu and you start to feel better?”

“Yes, I do.”

“And you know how it feels when you’re able to get out of bed and move around and eat something solid for the first time in days? … and you have that happy feeling in your heart that believes you’re getting well? … and you gradually see your strength and abilities return? ….”

“Yes, I do.”

“And you know how it feels to regain your strength again and be healthy enough to go back to work and resume your life?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Well … that’s what coming to Boot Camp has been like for me!”

“It’s like having the flu???”

“NO! It’s like getting your life back!”

USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP began 12 years ago this month And one of the BEST things about my job, and the benefits of the program, is the kind of conversation like the one above.

“Tony, you helped me get my life back!”

Does it get any better than that?

Does it?

Gary Gardia was the first “success story” of the program. Gary joined in September of 99. In 6 months Gary lost 65 pounds and his doctor took him off his high blood pressure medication!

I could never have anticipated those kinds of results and the benefits that would come from it when I founded this program 12 years ago.

Gary’s success opened my eyes to the health and medical benefits of the program. Happy consequences that I hadn’t considered when I designed it. They aren’t glamorous results or sexy benefits, necessarily.

They’re actually much deeper.

I’m not too concerned with trying to get people into bikini’s or attempting to further facilitate the fit to new kinesis. I do acknowledge that a certain degree of vanity fuels our efforts to “get in shape.” And I admit to being glad when people tell me that I don’t look, or act, my age. And I would personally like to get faster and fitter. But what better endorsement for my work than what happened first to Gary?

In the past 12 years, USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP has helped countless others “get their lives back.”

Let me humbly (if that’s possible!), and with all seriousness (equally difficult to muster), offer you my heartfelt thanks for your support and friendship. Some of you have been with me for years and others but for a few weeks. To all I say thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To those who have been with me for some time, I can’t thank you enough for your friendship, for giving me the best job in town and for ensuring — by your constant and regular support — that I have a career that I love and your camaraderie to enjoy! Thank you, dear friends!

And let me congratulate each of you for your own hard fought results and successes. I celebrate your victories, large and small!

CONGRATULATIONS!!

As we begin our 13th year of USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP together, I wish you all continued health, hope, happiness, fitness, faith, well being, and life! May your cup always be full!

(If you’ve been in Turdeville, if you’ve been out of the program for a while, or if you’ve never joined at all, let me personally invite you to “get your life back!” Come back! Join us!)

I’ll see you on the Quarterdeck!

PAYING THE PIED PIPER … a message from the Accounting Dept.

Just a reminder that payment is generally expected on the first of each month, but always appreciated whenever it shows up! Check your records and see if you’re due. Don’t make me send Vinnie, Bobby, and Lazy Eyed Lenny to collect! Thanks everyone!

Cash is fine, or course. And checks are easiest for me. And you can also pay online on the website (www.usmcfitnessbootcamp.com)

Additionally, if you would be so kind as to write in the “memo” section of your check, or the memo section of the online pay section, what month(s) the check is for, I’d really appreciate it. “Services rendered,” “Torture,” “Abuse,” “Pool cleaning,” and “For marijuana” are all very funny … but a month stated would be helpful too!

If you prefer to pay in cash, let me ask you to put the money in an envelope with your name and month(s) you’re paying for on the outside of the envelope? This will hopefully ensure that my bookkeeping is accurate. Thank you very much!

Olly Olly Oxen Free!! — Sgt. Tony Ludlow’s Newsletter for 8/24/2011

Aug. 24th 2011

What I’m about to tell you happens more than I wish that it did.

People join USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP, people work hard, people get great results, people improve their health and fitness … people feel better than they’ve felt in years … (so far, so good) … and then … sometimes … people quit coming.

The VERY same people who were losing weight, getting fit, feeling great, and achieving their goals … quit coming.

INCONCEIVABLE!! (Think “Princess Bride” here!)

Some of those people are reading this right now.

Is it you?

I know how it happened. I hear it all the time.

It begins with a single missed workout here … and then another missed workout there …

and before you know it, you’ve missed a week.

Then two.

Then a month missed.

Then monthS missed..

You NEVER intended to miss at all, right?

You never INTENDED to lose your way … to fall off the wagon …
to allow yourself to regain the weight you’d lost
or to lose the fitness that you’d worked so hard to achieve.

You never intended to wander into Turdville.

Former BOOT CAMPERS come back to the Quarterdeck all the time, usually two or three a month. And they all say the same thing. “Tony, can I come back? The best I ever felt was when I was doing boot camp with you … ”

“Then why did you quit, you BONEHEAD?!?” I want to ask. But I don’t. Usually.

The answers, varied and slightly different, all contain the above explanation. Quitting was unintended.

Dr. Wayne Dyer’s book, “The Power of Intention” speaks to the necessity of living intentionally. You control events, instead of events controlling you.

Of course, few ever say, “Well, I didn’t go to work on Monday … and then Tuesday I didn’t get up in time … and by Friday, I hadn’t gone to work all week!”

The differences in the things that we quit doing unintentionally and the things that we perform consistently are obligation and option.

See your duty to maintain, enhance, and increase your health and fitness as an important privilege. An important obligation! Your health and fitness are priceless and cannot be underestimated!

If you’ve been out there in Turdville … slacking … losing it … let me remind you that you can always come back to the fold. You can just pick right up with $75 a month. If you come back this week, you can have the rest of August and ALL of September for that fee!

Lastly, for those who’ve been getting this newsletter for literally YEARS but have never joined … don’t be skeert! Just do it! I won’t bite. I haven’t bitten anyone in over 3 years!!!

USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP is my fitness foundation. It gives me the foundation for my other physical activities. If you play tennis, softball, basketball, golf or swim, cycle, hike, ski, … whatever your activities are, you’ll be better and more competitive by having a BOOT CAMP foundation! If it’s good enough for Marines in combat, it’ll be good enough for you!

“Ask your doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.” (I read this yesterday and LOVED it!)

“Suck it up, Chief!” — Sgt. Tony Ludlow’s Newsletter for 8/17/2011

Aug. 17th 2011

I’m a little late with it, but here’s the August installment of “Ask Sgt. Tony.” This is where I answer questions that you’ve given to me, or ones that I’ve totally made up myself. You decide!

Q. Sgt. Tony, I’ve been working out pretty hard and I started drinking a protein shake along with my regular meals. But now my jeans are too tight and I’m gaining weight. Do you think this is “muscle weight” that I hear so much about?
A. No, this is not “muscle weight,” this is “fat weight.” Yes, it’s true that muscle weighs more than fat, but a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat. You’ve added more protein to your diet. Not a bad thing. But if you’ve added more calories to your diet, through the extra protein, than what your body needs in a given day, then you’ve just added more weight, not more muscle.

The August 1997 issue of The Physician and Sportsmedicine has the results of the latest research: “Based on a wide review of scientific data, current daily protein recommendations for serious strength trainers are about 0.6 to 0.8 grams per pound (1.4 to 1.8 g/kg).”

In other words, a 140-pound strength trainer needs 84 to 112 grams of protein per day and a 200-pounder 120 to 160 grams. If you are just trying to maintain muscle mass 0.6 grams per pound is enough, but if you’re training hard to build muscle the protein requirement goes up to the high end of the range, 0.7 to 0.8 grams per pound of body weight.

So, if you just take 120 grams of protein per day, as an average — 4.2 oz — the average American is probably getting their fair share of protein. (A McDonald’s Quater-pounder has that much alleged protein in one sandwich.)

Anytime you add protein beyond what your body needs and any number of excess calories consumed than what your body requires, will just be stored as … fat.

Q. Sgt. Tony, I’m planning on running the St. Jude Half Marathon, so I’m not going to do any extra working out so that I can devote myself to running.
A. That’s not a question.

Q. Do you think that’s a good idea?
A. Of course not. “One Dimensional Athletes” are what I call those who participate in just one sport, to the exclusion of other forms of athletics. You know the ones I mean. Runners who never do any weight training. Weight lifters and “workout queens” who never do any cardio.
Cross-training isn’t a term that you hear a lot, but the concept is essential for every athlete. A couple of years ago a buddy of mine dropped out of USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP to devote himself to training for the same marathon that I was going to be running as well. He quit doing any strength training and was devoting himself only to running. We finished within one minute of each other. I finished first … and I finished fitter.

Don’t be no one dimensional athlete! (Bad grammar, but good advice!)

Q. Sgt. Tony, do you think I should use heavier dumbbells?
A. Yes. Start immediately.

Q. Sgt. Tony, do you think I need new running shoes?
A. Yes. Most running shoes are good for about 3 to 4 months of regular (3 to 4 times a week) usage. When in doubt, get new shoes from Fleet Feet Sports in the Laurelwood Shopping Center.

Q. Sgt. Tony, do you have some advice for men?
A. Yes, I do.
“Suck it up, Chief.” I’d love to take credit for this, but it’s not mine. It belongs to a 5 year old boy who said it to his 5 year old buddy who was crying cuz mommy drove off after dropping the cryer off at kindergarten. My buddy, and evening boot camper, Tim Romanow amended it to “Suck it up, Chief! Live with the pain!” Love it!

Men, get over your car. It ain’t you. It just looks like your compensating.

Men, if your trophy wife is a complete air-head nut-job, she ain’t no trophy.

Men, cologne is a subtle accessory that a woman would only smell if she’s in your arms, not if she’s 5 rows behind you in the movie theater.

With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy, I give you my “You might be a douche bag.”

If you’re wearing a gold chain and your shirt is unbuttoned to mid belly, you might be a douche bag.

If you’ve got a stupid “soul patch,” making you look like a reject from The Jersey Shore, you might be a douche bag.

If your jeans cost more than $150, you might be a douche bag.

If you’re having lunch and bragging loud about some “big deal” you’re involved in, you might be a douche bag.

If you get drunk at lunch, you might be a douche bag.

If you’re a dad and you’re still smoking pot, you ARE a douche bag.

Men, if you’re wearing crocs, you’re not a douche bag. You’re just clueless.

Men, if you’re wearing pleated pants, see the crocs comment.

That ought to hold you til September!

———————————

AUGUST IS ANNIVERSARY MONTH!

We celebrate 12 years of USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP this month!

If you’re a veteran boot camper — you’ve been in the program for a year or longer — you may give a free month of boot camp to a friend or family member! They can come for the rest of this month for FREE!

NO FITNESS NUT! — Sgt. Tony Ludlow’s Newsletter for 8/10/2011

Aug. 10th 2011

I don’t ordinarily share this space with someone else. But when one of you wrote the following, I had to pass it on. With permission (name witheld by request), and many thanks, here is what I recieved from one of you yesterday. And thank you!

“WHY AM I ON THE QUARTERDECK?

I am not a fitness nut. Never have been. I am not a jock. Never been into team sports. So why do I do it? Why do I drag my butt out of bed before dawn every morning and show up on the quarterdeck, rain or shine, hot or cold, if I am not a competitive athlete or some type of fitness nut? Why am I out there on the Quarterdeck?

Because I am on the Quaterdeck….

I am able to pay less attention to what I eat and drink, and still fit into my clothes. Not what Tony, or my doctor wants to hear, but it is the truth.

Because I am on the Quarterdeck…

I enjoy hunting more. Because I am on the quarterdeck, I am a better hunter. I tire out less easily. I can still hike trails, climb trees, drag deer, and get back into the areas that receive less hunting pressure. Many of my hunting buddies have chosen, or been forced to choose, easier and less rewarding paths. And more importantly, they enjoy their hunting less than they used to because it tires them out.

Because I am on the Quarterdeck…

I am a better father. Being my age with a young child is challenging. I have been able to wrestle, ride bikes, ride skateboards, roller skate, coach softball, and coach basketball. Also, hopefully I am setting a good example by placing a high priority on a regular fitness program and someday this will pay dividends for my child.

Because I am on the Quarterdeck…

I am a better fisherman. I have been able to wade trout streams with more stamina and better balance than when I was younger. I have been able to land large tarpon and redfish. I have landed sharks over 100 lbs. I may not have had the upper body strength to do this, pre-bootcamp. And I certainly would have enjoyed it less.

Because I am on the Quarterdeck…

I am better in a pinch. I was recently able to dive into the pool and pull out my child and her friend when they got into a dangerous situation. I also was able to confront a “would be” thug with less fear than I would have had pre-boot camp.

Because I am on the Quarterdeck…

My dog is not too overweight, because I drag him along on many of my runs.

Because I am on the Quarterdeck…

I am a better employee, with increased strength, and a better immune system. I have missed almost no work days due to illness since beginning bootcamp 4+ years ago. That is ZERO sick days in 4 years! Does my employer take notice and reward this? Yes!

Because I am on the Quarterdeck…

I am a better husband (hopefully!). Not trying to toot my own horn but, increased metabolism, confidence, strength, and stamina as well as a more positive outlook on life. I am sure these things make me a better spouse. How do I know? Because my wife started attending boot camp too!

Because I am on the Quarterdeck…

I have listened to most of Tony’s stories and lectures a hundred times, frozen my butt off, drowned in sweat, almost puked, almost passed out, almost cried, made a ton of really great acquaintances and a few very good friends. Something I don’t say lightly…USMC Fitness Boot Camp has been, and God willing, will continue to be a life changing program for me.

But, hey, what do I know, I’m no fitness nut.

Tony, thank you for all your hard work, your dedication, your presence, your pressure, and your patience.
May God bless you and your mission.”

Thank you, sir! Here’s to changed lives and new accomplishments as we launch into our 13th year! Share this gift with a friend or family member!

——————————-

WHY ARE YOU SINGLE?

The piece that I started writing a few weeks ago has grown to a length beyond posting here! It has taken on a life of its own! I’ll post it on the Boot Camp website Blog page when I finish. I’ll let you know when it’s finished and when I post it.

——————————-

AUGUST IS ANNIVERSARY MONTH!

We celebrate 12 years of USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP this month!

If you’re a veteran boot camper — you’ve been in the program for a year or longer — you may give a free month of boot camp to a friend or family member! They can come for the rest of this month for FREE!

I want to thank everyone who came to the Anniversary Party last night! It was the best attended and most awesomest party ever! Thank you everyone for sharing your time and fun with me!

——————————–

FINALLY GETTING RID OF MIKE & ANNE!!

With great sadness, I have to tell you that soon my life will be missing two of my favorite people. Mike Barta and Anne Emmerth are moving to Ohio this month.

These two knuckleheads have been a part of my life for so long that I don’t remember doing Boot Camp without them. For years they have added so much to the energy and feel of the 0530 Quarterdeck that it seems like a bad dream that they’ll be gone soon. Their indispensable friendship and their ready and reliable help as assistant instructors make them irreplaceable.

I love you guys. Thank you so much for sharing your lives with me and helping to keep me from living under a bridge. I am grateful for you both and will miss you more than you can imagine. All the best to you, my friends.

Once Upon a Time — Sgt. Tony Ludlow’s Newsletter for 8/3/2011

Aug. 3rd 2011

Monday, August 2, 1999 – USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP: Launched!

What started as a little exercise gig for me to do before going on to my day job of teaching high school history and coaching, took on a life of it’s own.

During one of my two week summer studies at the University of Notre Dame during the summer of 1999, I got the idea for what evolved into USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP.

Several factors played a role in the process of establishing the program. One of the most important was my friend Mark’s insistence that people would want to be abused by me and would pay for the privilege! Really, Mark? I didn’t believe him, but I started thinking about it anyway. And for the record, I had plenty of people tell me that the idea was stupid and that it would never amount to much.

I sat down in my dorm room at Notre Dame and started brainstorming. Soon the idea came into focus and I started kicking around plans and and sketching out a strategy. By the time I got back to Memphis I had a legal pad full of ideas and a name for the program.

I spent a month putting up flyers on bulletin boards in laundry mats, company break rooms, coffee shops, and anywhere there was a corkboard. With no Facebook to use, I had to get the word out the old fashioned way; I had to actually talk to people face to face.

On August 2, 1999 I started with 5 brave souls at 5:30 on the campus of the University of Memphis. By the end of the month the number of participants had grown to 3! I was an instant success!!

For the next three years I continued to teach school and coach and do Boot Camp, and that was just fine by me. But three years after launching, the program truly had grown and I was faced with a dilemma. Do I take a break from teaching and give this a shot full time, or just keep on doing what I’m doing? The principal of the school had changed and the new guy was a complete moron. I really didn’t want to work for him anymore.

I decided to take a break from teaching and see what would happen. It was one of the scariest decisions I’d ever made. I’d never been self-employed. It truly was a leap of faith into the darkness. The same people from before told me that I was making a mistake, that I’d starve to death.

Monday we celebrated our 12th year and literally thousands have been on my Quarterdeck over the past twelve years! I’ve also trained hundreds to run their first half marathon in 16 different training sessions. And I’ve trained a couple a’ dozen of you to run your first triathlon!

I’m one of the luckiest guys in the world! And more than likely you’re reading this because you’ve been one of those who’ve been abused by me! And to you, I say Thank You!

If you’re currenlty on The Quarterdeck and doing Boot Camp with me, I can’t begin to thank you enough!! It’s because of you that I have my dream job! Because of you I’ve been able to provide for my family. Because of you I’ve been able to send my kids to college. It’s because of you that I am one of the happiest guys in the world! It’s because of you that I’m so blessed and so privileged to do something that I dearly love. I am grateful for you every single day, though you wouldn’t know it by the horrible way that I treat you!

Thank you all so very very much. And I mean that most sincerely.

I actually never set out to establish an exercise class or even a fitness program. I set out to establish a fitness community. I wanted it to be something like my life in the Marine Corps. I wanted the physical challenge of the program to have a team feel and for there to be a sense of camaraderie and belonging.

The program has been written up in every major print medium in Memphis and been featured on all of the local television stations. I was on the TLC television show, “Honey, We’re Killing the Kids.” And a piece about USMC Fitness Boot Camp was part of a FOX Network show a few years ago. And I’ve even been featured in the Wall Street Journal — not bad for a guy whose only commodity is push ups in a parking lot!

Years ago one of you said, “Tony, you’re like a minister and the Quarterdeck is your church!” And to some extent that’s kind of how I’ve approached it. I’ve tried to plug into your lives in ways that were beyond an exercise class.

To me, you’re like family.

As a result, I’ve attended the school plays of boot camper’s children. I’ve gone to your children’s football games, tennis matches, lacrosse matches, basketball games, soccer games, t-ball games, chess tournaments, ballet recitals, car washes, cross country meets, band concerts, and talent shows. And I’ve enjoyed myself more than I can tell you!

I’ve attended your birthday parties, your golf tournaments, tennis tournaments, art shows, craft fairs, charity events, and auctions. And I’ve contributed hundreds of boot camp gift certificates to your causes. I’ve bought stuff at your charity yard sales. I’ve bought tons of fundraiser candy, cookie dough, and goodies. And I’ve probably bought more Girl Scout Cookies from your daughters than I care to admit!

I’ve helped a dozen of you find jobs. I’ve helped hundreds of you find a plumber, electrician, physician, dentist, eye doctor, dietitian, roofer, painter, computer repairman, accountant, lawn care professional, lawyer, running speciality store and on and on that list goes! And I’ve diagnosed hundreds and hundreds of injuries and ailments for free, saving you time and money spent to hear your doc tell you the same thing. I’m NOT a replacement for a condition or situation that requires a diagnosis above my medical training and I’ll be the first to admit it, so relax, Dr. Arthur Franklin. But since I’ve had so many fricken injuries myself, multiple times, I’m a pretty good resource for sports related injuries. Plus I’ve actually had some sports medicine training in the area.

I’ve been honored to attend the weddings of boot camper’s children and even the weddings of some of you boot campers. Though none of you have ever taken me up on my offer to sing at your wedding. I have a whole playlist of Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, and Air Supply tunes all ready!

I’ve visited you in the hospital when babies were born and when you or your family members have gotten sick. I’ve sat in the ICU waiting room with you hoping for good news.

I’ve also attended the funerals of your parents and relatives. And it’s been my sad honor to attend the funerals of two of the finest boot campers and friends that I’ve ever had, Jim Steiner and Henry Kenworthy’s brother, Ken.

It’s been my great joy to laugh with you when you were laughing in some of your happiest moments. And it’s been my solemn duty to be with you when your life was turned upside down by tragedy, sadness, and setback.

I don’t just love exercise and fitness. I love people. You matter to me more than I can explain. I learn your names and try not to forget them because you’re important to me. Your life beyond the Quarterdeck matters to me. That’s why I ask you questions about your life. It’s why I know the names of your children and your cats and dogs.

And you tell me things. All kinds of things. You open up your life to me and let me in. For some, I’m the closest thing to a priest or minister you have and you confide in me in ways that are very similar to the relationship people have with their minister. I’ve been asked why people tell me things and the only answer I can think of is that it’s because people know that I care about them, that I want to help them, and that I can be trusted.

The Quarterdeck is made up of all kinds of interesting and wonderful people. You are a rainbow of many awesome and incredible colors. Most of the time people join the program hoping that I’ll be able to help them change their lives. But when someone new joins I always ask myself, “I wonder how this person is going to change MY life?” And everyone of you have changed it. If you’ve ever been a part of the program, you’ve changed my life in ways you probably never imagined.

USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP is more than an exercise class. It’s been called an “early morning exercise cult” (hahaha). But I’d like to think of it as something much more vibrant and living. It’s a community.

It’s been twelve awesome years and I am eternally grateful to you all! Thank you so very much for being a part of my life and for allowing me to be a part of yours!

SGT. TONY’S HALF MARATHON TRAINING!

It’s getting close.

Training for the St. Jude Half Marathon begins on Saturday, September 4. My training program is perfect for the first time half marathoner as well as the half marathon veteran!

Can you do this?

If by the end of August you can run 3 miles without stopping in under 35 min, you’ll be ready to begin training. This assumes that you’re doing an hour of continuous cardio on the weekends. There’s 5 weeks to get ready! Not sure? Let’s talk.

Training is open to all.

Cost for the three month program is $75 for members of USMC Fitness Boot Camp and $120 for non-boot campers.

HEAT INDEX

Anytime the heat index is 100 or above we’ll go inside.

If the conditions warrant it, the evening class may also be found on the courtyard inside the day school area.

CALENDAR

A calendar has been added to the official USMC Fitness BOOT CAMP website.
http://www.usmcfitnessbootcamp.com/calendar.html

For you visual learners, you’ll find this an easy way to glance at the week or month and see where the workouts will be, if there’s a venue change.

What would you do if money were not an issue, fear were not a factor, and failure were not an option?

To your optimum health and fitness!

SEE YOU ON THE QUARTERDECK!
