IN THE ZONE! — Weekly Newsletter 11/28/07
Yes, it’s true.
I am a grandfather!
Actually, I’m “Big Dad” to young Isaiah Matthew Ludlow, newborn son to my firstborn son, Matthew and my daughter-in-law, Starr. Isaiah is the heir apparent to the Boot Camp Empire!
Mom and son are doing better. Isaiah arrived by way of an emergency c-section in the wee hours of Monday, the 26th. They are still in the hospital due to a couple of lingering issues that my young grandson is dealing with. Minor issues, really. But enough so that the doctor wants to keep an eye on them for another day or so.
My thanks to Richard Bourland, Teri Trotter, and Margaret Caffey for stepping up at the last minute to cover my absence on Monday. Thanks guys!
Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers! Please keep them up. I have a picture of three generations of Ludlow Men posted on the blog http://usmcfitnessbootcamp.com/blog/
By the way, you can subscribe to the blog and you’ll get a notification anytime I post something new there.

IN THE ZONE
This is the time of year I call “the zone.” The Zone is the time of gluttony begun on Thanksgiving and ending on New Years. In between these two holidays you’ll have LOTS of opportunities to overeat: office parties, social events, church events that always involve food, Christmas and Hanukkah parties, you know the drill. Holiday “snacks” are EVERYWHERE! Be on your guard! It’s OK to say “yes” sometimes … but don’t say yes EVERYtime!
The Today Show had the average Thanksgiving meal displayed on their day before Thanksgiving show. The meal was about 5,000 calories worth of food! BUT I’m telling you that I’ve NEVER attended a Thanksgiving Day dinner where ANYone ate that small amount! The portions were too small and there just wasn’t much variety. And no self respecting Southerner would offend their hosts by eating so meagerly! We like to load up our plates and pile it on … and then go back for seconds … and thirds … and then we’ll have pie and cake after that!
Thanksgiving sets us up for The Zone’s mantra: “Thanksgiving only comes once a year.” “Christmas only comes once a year.” “Hanukkah only comes once a year.” “December 8th only comes once a year.” “December 22 only comes once a year.” ad infinitum! “Such and such only comes once a year.”
Be careful. Celebrate responsibly. Try not to eat like a pig!
Here’s a little tip: eat a small amount and then wait 15 minutes before you go back for more. You will find that in most cases you’ll feel full and won’t go back. It takes about 15 minutes for your stomach to relay the message back to the brain that it’s satisfied and needs no more. If you keep shoveling it in as fast as you can … well … you’re gonna feel miserable really soon … and your gut will swell like a beach ball!
HOLIDAY CHALLENGE PARTICIPANTS: Your second weigh-in is on Friday!
BTW, the “Biggest Loser” of this year’s Holiday Challenge will receive an additional FREE MONTH of Boot Camp! That will be a total of THREE FREE MONTHS!

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR THE TROOPS
Joanne Clark informs me that if you’re planning to send packages to the troops, they need to be postmarked by December 4 to ensure delivery by Christmas.

And now … Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy
“One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. “Oh no,” I said, “Disneyland burned down.” He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.”
To your continued wellness, good health, and fitness,
Tony
