SURF’S UP!! — Important News 10/26/07

Greetings All!
Is this Seattle? Portland? Southeast Asia during the monsoon? I’m officially over this wet weather and will give a FREE YEAR OF BOOT CAMP to whoever ends it and lets the sunshine in!
RACE FOR THE CURE
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is tomorrow morning at 8:30 at the Shops of Saddle Creek.
http://race.raceforthecurememphis.org/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=1070 This is a GREAT cause and a fun race. I think there’s a store front in the Carrefour Shopping Center (Kirby and Poplar) that’ll be open today from 4 to 9 for registration. There is no race day registration. I FULLY intended to include this in Wednesday’s newsletter. My apologies.
NEW YORK CITY MARATHON & TEAM FOR KIDS!
Thank you, one and all, who’ve given toward this wonderful charity! Monday is the last day to make online donations. I’ll bring my two Team for Kids shirts to Boot Camp next week and I’d like everyone who has donated to sign their name on my shirts. I’ll wear those shirts in New York! Thank you again, so very very much!
GURLZ NIGHT OUT
OK, you can stop! I’ve heard you! There will be a Girl’s Night Out too! I’ve been told that you girls want a night out too and that Sergeant Tony can be an “honorary girl” for the night! OK, fine! YOU suggest the day, and I’ll get the word out!

A GUY’S STORY — (This story was requested this morning at 0530. Thought some of you might enjoy it too.)
I was going to tell you a story about my philodendron, but I’ll wait until next week!
Instead, I offer you this little story about a “guy.”
A few years ago this guy showed up at the 0530 class. He was quite the metro-sexual. He had highlights in his hair, a year round tan, and wore very colorful spandex tights over his skinny legs. And even though he was in his late thirties or early forties, he sounded a lot like Bill & Ted when he spoke. Lots of “kewl dude” and “wow, man” and “that’s sooooooo bowwwwwgus.”
And he only used 5 pound dumbbells.
Unknown to me, after his first week of Boot Camp, he told the girl he was dating “that boot camp thing wasn’t much.”
Oh reeeaaallly??
Unknown to him, the girl he was dating was a friend of MINE … and she told me everything.
After using 5 pound dumbbells for a couple of weeks, he showed up one morning without his gear. He walked up to me before class, interrupted me while I was talking to someone else, and said, “Hey Sarge man, … ”
(Editorial Comment: NEVER EVER refer to any Sergeant of Marines as “sarge.” That nickname is NEVER used in The Corps and is seen as derogatory and disrespectful. And then NEVER EVER EVER add “man” to the sarge thing.)
“Hey Sarge man … like, check it out dude … I like, TOTALLY left my weights and stuff in my Porsche … so … you got some I can borrow, right?”
“Sure, you can borrow mine, ” I said, pointing to my 32 pound adjustable dumbbells sitting on the deck next to my duffel bag.
(Editorial Comment: If you’ve seen the back of my truck, you know that I have lighter dumbbells that he could have used. hehehe)
“Yer a kewel dude, Sarge man,” he said as he bent over and attempted to pick the dumbbells up.
Not wanting to appear unmanly, he did manage to haul, or drag, them to his spot on the Quarterdeck … in two trips.
The next 45 minutes were priceless!
Adjustable dumbbells have a tendency to be noisy as you use them. Sort of like “sounding brass, or tinkling cymbal!” I had to count the exercises using my extra-LOUD-outside-voice that morning because I was competing with the crashing of my adjustable dumbbells and the grunts and groans of surfer dude.
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh! CLANKKK!!!! errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr CRASH!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh CLANG!!!
It was beautiful.
Watching him stagger away from the Quarterdeck that morning was very entertaining. I wanted to do an end zone celebration dance and say “IN YOUR FACE SURFER DUDE!!”
But I didn’t.
I just smiled as one of you broke into “everybody’s gone surfin’ … surfin’ USA!” (My apologies to The Beach Boys)
Moral of the story: If you want more out of your Boot Camp workouts, go heavier! Get some heavier dumbbells and then do the exercises … all of the exercises … and do all of the repetitions … all the way up and all the way down … with lots of intensity.
Have a GREAT weekend everyone! Surfs up!!!
To your continued good health and fitness,
Tony
