SECRET LANGUAGE — WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 9/21/07

Friday, Sep. 21st 2007 11:16 AM

Today in the Commercial Appeal there’s an interesting article about the secret language of families. It seems that most families, probably yours too, have words and phrases that you have to teach people who become part of the family through marriage or close association.

One of the words that one family used is one that any of us who’ve seen National Lampoon’s “Vacation” with Chevy Chase can relate to. The word, I think used as a verb, is “to Griswold” some event or attraction. The family in the article used it like this: “Let’s Griswold the museum and get something to eat.” Meaning, to go quickly through the museum and get on with the next activity.

I was reminded that Boot Campers speak a family language too.

New members to our cult learn about a place to avoid called “Turdeville” and a place to attend and go to frequently called “the Quarterdeck.” Some new members, with no exposure to our military, must learn that “Marine Corps” is a sacred thing to yell with pride. Newbies learn a new way of counting where 20 is really only 10 on the Quarterdeck. Then there’s all of those crazy names of exercises that you generally won’t find in any exercise manual. And no workout is really really over until a loud enthusiastic “AYE AYE, SIR!” echos through the neighborhood! (What are we, a bunch of pirates??)

If you’re reading this while sitting in Turdeville, get your butt back to the Quarterdeck! Your Boot Camp family can’t wait to see you back in “the herd!”

HALF MARATHON TRAINING

We’ll be training this coming Saturday at 8 AM at Shelby Farms. It’s not too late to start!

We’ll train up until one week from the St. Jude’s Half Marathon on December 1. We train at a “5 minute ‘on,’ 1 minute ‘off’” routine. Meaning that we jog for 5 minutes at an 11minute 30 second per mile pace, and then walk for 1 minute. Then we repeat that for the total length of time for our run. This coming Saturday we’ll be going for 1hr. 40min total. Trust me, at that pace, it’s really doable.

The cost for the three month training is $75 for EVERYONE!

Beginners are welcome! You can come this Saturday and give it a trial run for free.
