If you’re a veteran Boot Camper, a Lance Corporal or above (a Boot Camper for more than a year), you’ll know that I’ve had a bias against running with headphones.

I’ve always discouraged the use of headphones and encouraged Boot Campers to get in touch with their “inner runner.”

It took a long while for running to become something I “enjoyed.” I did it as a kid because my coaches insisted that we run. They used running as a form of punishment. I grew up HATING to run!!!! I ran as a Marine because the Marine Corps demanded it of me. I didn’t like it much at all. The Marine Corps’ physical fitness test includes a 3 mile run and the faster you run it, the better your overall PFT score is. The better your overall score, the better your chances of promotion. A Marine’s PFT score is a part of the promotion portfolio for a Marine’s advancement in rank. So I ran.

Long story made short, my experience with running began badly. Simply put, I hated running. But a Marine has no choice. You must run.

In time I learned to embrace it, to “enjoy” the run. It happened with no music but my own breathing and the sound of my own footfall. No distractions but my own thoughts. Over the years I learned to use the time I spent running to think, meditate, plan, pray, decompress, sort out my thoughts, organize my life. I was pretty sure that anything coming from headphones would rob me of that experience. And I was pretty sure that it would rob other runners of that experience as well. An experience that was integral and important to me as a runner, as an athlete, as a human being.

Then I got an iPod last year for my birthday … and suddenly everything changed.

I’m a new man. A changed runner. I’m an iPod convert!

The music hasn’t taken anything from my inner runner. I still think and ponder. And the music has made a difference in the speed I run! I run faster without really trying to run faster! The music gets me movin’!

Now I want your input!

What’s on YOUR iPod?

Email me with 10 of your favorite iPod running tunes, songs that give you happy feet. I’ll compile the list, with or without your name, depending on your privacy preference, and make the list available on the website. This will be fun, so do it. Don’t ask questions, just do it! Do it NOW! Who knows, your tunes may help a fellow Boot Camper to enjoy their runs more!

Here 10 of my favs, in no particular order … and no snickering from you music snobs!
1. Pretty Vegas — INXS
2. Hey Man Nice Shot — Filter
3. Smells Like Teen Spirit — Nirvana

Not hardly! But this has been an awesome week so far. Each class has had lots of friends and family visitors! Friday will NOT be “picture day!” With the dip in temps and Friday being a holiday, we’ll aim for picture day at another warmer less festive day!

And don’t forget, the Boot Camper who brings the most visitors for the month of April will get a crisp $100.00 bill!!!

Our friend and fellow Boot Camper had breast cancer surgery yesterday afternoon. And YES, she was at Boot Camp yesterday morning at 0530! (Kathryn, you ROCK!)

In addition to a lumpectomy, she had lymph nodes and ovaries removed. Chemotherapy and radiation will follow. Today she is recovering and needs your continued prayers.
