STROKE OF LUCK! — WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
” … Vanity of vanities; all is vanity.”
Says the writer of the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes.
I don’t know what that ancient sage would think about BOOT CAMP, since much of what we hope to accomplish through our exercise might be labeled “vanity.”
I say a lot about weight loss and the techniques of losing weight. Sometimes we lose weight to look good, sometimes to feel good, and sometimes to live good.
Weight loss is part of the whole picture that makes up good health and fitness. Mostly we want to lose weight to look good. I mean, who among us wants to show up at our 10 or 20 year high school reunion weighing 20 pounds more than we did when we graduated??
BOOT CAMP is primarily a health and fitness program based on the physical fitness principles of the Marine Corps. But obviously, weight loss is a part of what we do.
The myriad results and benefits of good health and fitness are so well known that the biggest slacker-dog-loser-gutterslug could recite them.
Today I’d like for you to think about something that’s not so much appearance related. Not a vanity thing. I’m talking about reducing your risks of stroke. Not exactly a glamorous or sexy topic, but highly relevant.
Recently I’ve heard about a couple of people, young by most accounts, who’ve had strokes.
You’re at risk for a stroke if you smoke, have high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. You can reduce your risk of stroke through diet and exercise. But sometimes, even when you do as much as you can, genetics and family history make you predisposed to certain health risks.
Here are the warning signs of a stroke:
Stroke is a medical emergency. Know these warning signs of stroke and teach them to others. Every second counts:
– Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
– Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
– Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
– Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
– Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
(I know that some of you have these symptoms after about 7 body builders, but that’s different!)
These warning signs MUST NOT be ignored; act quickly, treat them seriously, and call 911 immediately!
