FREE WEEK!!! — Weekly Newsletter

Mar. 28th 2007

One of the last century’s most enigmatic figures was a German theologian named Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

In his short 39 years, Bonhoeffer demonstrated the power of Christian critical thinking, unapologetic apologetics, and downright in your face head knockin’! These things led to his imprisonment by the Nazis and to his eventual execution.

One of my favorite Bonhoeffer quotes is this one:

“The essence of optimism is that it takes no account of the present,
but it is a source of inspiration, of vitality and hope
where others have resigned;
it enables a man to hold his head high,
to claim the future for himself
and not to abandon it to his enemy.”

PROFILES IN COURAGE … AND OTHER NEWS

Mar. 23rd 2007

Here are BOOT CAMP’S DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS
1. Losing weight is 75% about your eating and drinking habits and only 25% about what you do.
2. Being fit and in shape is 75% about what you do and only 25% about what you eat.
3. The average heart rate of your tempo runs and your BOOT CAMP weight workouts are probably about the same.
4. It’s possible to be fit AND FAT.
5. It’s possible to be skinny AND horribly unfit and out of shape.
6. BOOT CAMPER’s who say they’ll do their cardio workouts “on their own,” seldom do.
7. Male Boot Campers who have been in The Battalion for more than a month and who use less than 15 pound dumbbells, ought to wear a skirt.
8. Women won’t get big bulky muscles at BOOT CAMP.

STROKE OF LUCK! — WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Mar. 21st 2007

” … Vanity of vanities; all is vanity.”
Says the writer of the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes.

I don’t know what that ancient sage would think about BOOT CAMP, since much of what we hope to accomplish through our exercise might be labeled “vanity.”

I say a lot about weight loss and the techniques of losing weight. Sometimes we lose weight to look good, sometimes to feel good, and sometimes to live good.

Weight loss is part of the whole picture that makes up good health and fitness. Mostly we want to lose weight to look good. I mean, who among us wants to show up at our 10 or 20 year high school reunion weighing 20 pounds more than we did when we graduated??

Greetings all.

More sad news I’m afraid:

I doubt that many of you would know the name of Tom Farrar.

Tom died a few weeks ago.

Who was Tom and why do I mention him?

KEN KENWORTHY — A LIFE WELL LIVED

Mar. 14th 2007

Boot Campers are more than just clients or customers to me. Ken Kenworthy was my buddy, but he was also my older brother. From our very beginning in 1999, members of our little group have been family to me and Ken was one of my bros.

When we were at the U of M, I referred to him as “The Weatherman”

MOVIE REVIEWS — Just For Fun

Mar. 5th 2007

I saw “Black Snake Moan” and “Zodiac” this weekend. If you’re old enough to remember the Zodiac killings in California, then you’ll probably like this movie. But be warned, it’s waaaaay too looooooooooong. It’s not scary. It’s not suspenseful. And the actors do a minimally acceptable job. But what you might like is the time capsule effect of the movie. The music, clothes, and low tech life of that time period are all captured in the film and are pretty nostalgic, I thought. “Black Snake Moan” is Christina Ricci’s skanky softcore porn movie with a blues soundtrack. Samuel L. Jackson does a good job playing Samuel L. Jackson. And Justin Timberlake does a great job playing a sissy-boy-bed-wetter. You’ll be hardpressed to find a single scene where someone in need of a shower isn’t smoking a cigarette. I felt like I needed to take a shower after I saw it. “BSM” gets 2 1/2 cigarette lighters out of 5. And “Zodiac” gets 2 old fashioned black telephones out of 5.

LIFE LESSONS LEARNED — MY FIRST TRIATHLON!

Mar. 2nd 2007

Remember the last time you learned a “life lesson?”

When we were kids we learned those life lessons everyday. You know the ones I mean, “dirt … bad, ice cream … good,” “cute little dogs will bite,” “cats don’t fetch,” “kissing dogs good, kissing girls better.”

At 24, I ran my first triathlon. I was a rather studly Marine type guy and thought the swim, bike, run thing would be fun. I thought that I’d sort of accumulated most of all the “life lesson” thingies already.

I was wrong.
